The hair follicle produces an enzyme called 5 alpha reductase. When the testosterone in the follicle combines with the 5 alpha reductase, the result is: dihydrotestosterone or DHT. The hair follicle receptors are very sensitive to DHT and this triggers male pattern hair loss.
Approximately 95% of hair loss cases fit into this type and it can begin at any time between the ages of 20 to 45 years.
